BNSF Fueling Facilities Improvements

TKDA revitalizes key fueling facility, prioritizing environmental integrity

As a major hub for intermodal freight and other high-priority shipments between the Pacific Northwest and the eastern part of the United States, the BNSF Railways Company’s Interbay rail yard required facility improvements. BNSF commissioned TKDA to develop construction documents for upgrading the Interbay fueling facility to meet the high demand.

Located in the heart of Seattle, Washington, the Interbay facility improvements required particular attention to the environmentally sensitive surroundings. TKDA’s design consisted of three interrelated foci: a new tank car loadout rack complete with track pan containment and DFO distribution system, a new DFO truck unload facility, and an HDPE liner system to the storage tank containment dike. Key issues when designing the improvements included reliability, operability, and maintainability. TKDA also provided on-site construction management and startup support services.
