Bridge Over Kingsbury Creek

When the City of Duluth experienced flooding during an extreme rainfall event, BNSF’s existing 10’ span by 9’ rise concrete arch culvert carrying Kingsbury Creek and the track embankment failed. BNSF retained TKDA for engineering services, including situation survey, hydraulic evaluation, permitting, and design for a replacement structure. For speed of construction, the team replaced the culvert with a bridge. The new bridge is a 136-foot long, five-span structure consisting of prestressed concrete double-cell box beams bearing on precast concrete caps welded to steel H-piling. The design team completed all work tasks, including permitting, in less than two weeks.
