Wisconsin Point is a sandspit between Lake Superior and the St. Louis River east of the original harbor entry in Superior, Wisconsin. TKDA provided an analysis and review of an existing management plan and site conditions to develop a conceptual design for public comment and construction documents. The project consisted of designing 750 feet of wooden boardwalks and restoring impacted dune areas to their original condition, including planting dune grass into previously impacted areas.
The Point holds immense historic significance to the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and other Ojibwa bands in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Since the entire area is considered a Native American burial ground, there were required regulatory steps to ensure any discovered artifacts or remains were handled appropriately. TKDA helped the City navigate this process to keep the project moving forward and worked with affected families to ensure their concerns were handled in a sensitive manner.
